“Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible
to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility” UN Secretary General
Ban Ki-moon The United Nations has declared 2012 the International Year
of Cooperatives. With the international years of cooperatives we have ability to
smash the BKS (best-kept secret) that shrouds credit unions – if, we work together
in a coordinated fashion. This session will bring you the latest update on what
credit unions and cooperative have planned for the year, how you can get involved
and how we can make the international year of cooperatives the start of the revolution
not the end in itself.
Objectives
The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) is the global trade association and leading
development agency for credit unions. It has members from 74 countries, has programs
in 9 countries and lobbies on behalf of credit unions to ensure positive outcomes
for credit unions. At this session you’ll learn about the World Council, how its
work affects credit unions and the opportunity that the United Nation’s International
Year of Cooperative affords credit unions.

simply making sure their own shops are sound is not enough. Credit Union Times Editor-in-Chief

of systemic risks. As a result, laws are being passed to prevent another financial
crisis from occurring again and to protect victims who have suffered losses. Moreover,

changes.

Economic Forecast Economics
Recovery from the Great Recession of 2008-2009 has been less robust than normal,
restrained by indebted consumers and governments, banking woes, Mid-East unrest,
and surging oil prices. What can we expect in 2012? This session will review recent
developments in the US and global economies and will consider prospects for the
coming year.

global financial crisis. This session will review the changes to Fed policy and
their rationale, the debate on whether the Fed’s response to the crisis was effective,
and the possible legacy of these policy actions for future financial industry performance,
inflation control, and central bank independence.

NCUA Update

Board Chair Matz will review current key credit union ratios and discuss them in
the context of NCUA’s supervisory and regulatory efforts and agenda. The program
will also include a review of hot examination issues and areas that volunteers should
pay particular attention to. The program is designed to be interactive so that volunteers
can have a dialogue on these key issues with a top policy maker at the federal regulator
and insurer for credit unions.
- Learn about and understand the current trends and financial statistics of the credit
union system. - Connect those trends to the top regulatory and supervisory issues that are the focus
